Mid-Century Modern Meets Montauk: A Timeless Coastal Retreat

Montauk, New York

Photography: Conor Harrigan

Nestled on a hill with views in every direction, this Montauk home, originally designed by iconic architects George Nelson and Gordon Chadwick, embodies mid-century design and timeless coastal living. Set on nearly an acre of land that borders Montauk Point State Park, the property feels both private and expansive, surrounded by water, sky, and serene natural surroundings.
A true mid-century modern masterpiece, the home is uniquely designed with several intersecting hexagonal volumes, each room a six-sided structure. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the main living areas flood the interiors with natural light and frame ever-changing views of the surrounding landscape.

For the homeowner, who long dreamed of a summer retreat to unwind and recharge, this property offered the ideal sanctuary. The outdoor space extends along the full length of the house and is thoughtfully designed for entertaining and relaxation. Separated by sliding glass doors, a saltwater pool, lounge area, and outdoor dining and cooking space, blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

On one end of the outdoor space is an outdoor kitchen from the Urban Bonfire x Dekton collection in the Bromo & Onyx colorway. Dekton’s Bromo, a deep, slate-inspired gray, pairs beautifully with the weathered greywood shingles iconic to the Hamptons region. Known for its durability, Dekton is resistant to UV rays, stains, and extreme temperatures, making it ideal for the seaside environment. The fluting of the Ukiyo finish beautifully mirrors the home's distinctive architecture, where sharp angles and vertical lines provide an eye-catching contrast of geometric shapes.

The kitchen is equipped with a Fògher drop-in grill and a Pitt Cooking burner, both selected from Urban Bonfire’s curated appliance offerings. Seamlessly integrated into the countertop, they preserve the visual integrity of the space, ensuring the architecture remains the focal point.

This project is a celebration of modernist architecture, natural elements, and curated outdoor living. An extraordinary blend of design and setting that captures the spirit of Montauk and stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design, proving that contemporary luxury and historical preservation can coexist in perfect harmony.
