A Hideaway Above the Valley

Notched into a steep hillside overlooking the dramatic, sweeping vistas of Alexander Valley, this 1,200-square-foot guesthouse is deeply embedded in its site—a sanctuary where indoor comfort and the surrounding elements meet in an effortless, uninterrupted flow.

Designed as a dedicated retreat for visiting family, the residence was built "by the kids, for the kids"—a generous escape for the owners’ adult children while grandchildren stay at the main house just up the hill. Crowned by a living roof, the guesthouse virtually vanishes into the terrain when viewed from above, preserving the pristine views of the valley floor.

A short flight of stairs leads down to a 730-square-foot outdoor pavilion crafted from warm decking and tailored stone. Here, life naturally moves outside.

"The character of the landscape is defined by the generous amount of programming, the sweeping valley views, and the relationship between the residence and the land—all stitched together by a sense of simplicity and order," says Mike Lucas, founding principal of Lucas & Lucas.

Fitting such a rich array of experiences, including a linear lap pool, lounge area, open-air firepit, and a high-performance outdoor kitchen, into a compact footprint was the project's central design challenge.

"We utilized changes in the hardscape underfoot to provide a subtle delineation of spaces and create a sense of journey from one area to another," Lucas explains. Feathered native grasses soften the hardscape edges, blurring the line where intentional design meets nature.

To bring this complex vision to life, architect Daniel Strening and interior designer Nicole Hollis joined forces with Lucas & Lucas and Cello Maudru Construction. When it came to specifying the outdoor kitchen, Strening turned to Urban Bonfire.

"It’s a clean, modern solution to outdoor kitchen needs. The aesthetic and durability combined to make it the perfect fit—reinforcing the fine details of both the interiors and exteriors across the overall project," explains Strening.

At the heart of the outdoor space sits an inviting island and bar set up featuring Urban Bonfire cabinetry from our Origine Collection topped with a slab of basaltina, a refined gray volcanic stone. Built directly into the surrounding wall structure, a wood-burning Grillworks grill completes the setup, anchoring the pavilion for gathering, cooking, and dining al fresco.

Working alongside Urban Bonfire’s design specialists to integrate the cabinetry into the site’s challenging topography, Lucas summarizes the co-creation process as simply "seamless."

The result is a harmonious interplay of sunlit patios, shaded nooks, and generous seating areas that invite everyone to slow down. Between the living roof, the valley views, and the quiet rhythm of the outdoor kitchen, the landscape asks very little of its visitors—except that they stay awhile.
