In the rolling, wooded terrain of Los Altos Hills, a modern family home underwent a dramatic transformation. The goal was to strip away outdated finishes and rebuild a refined, contemporary sanctuary that could be enjoyed both privately and socially. For the outdoor spaces, a key challenge emerged: how to fit a full suite of amenities, including an outdoor kitchen for entertaining, onto a steep, difficult hillside.
This is where the vision of the team at renowned landscape architecture firm, Randy Thueme Design, came to life. Tasked with integrating a comprehensive program into the site’s steep topography, their design centered on a series of descending terraces. This elegant solution not only connected the multiple levels of the home but also created distinct, functional spaces for entertaining, lounging, and enjoying the magnificent views.

The homeowners, a young family who love to entertain, had a clear vision for their new outdoor space. With privacy as a main design goal, they sought to successfully screen views from adjacent properties and the street, while still providing an open and inviting atmosphere. Their must-haves for the space included a private entryway courtyard, a lounge area, an infinity pool, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen for dinner parties.

The unique, multi-level layout of this space required a truly tailored outdoor kitchen solution. Rather than struggling to fit a standard unit, the project partners chose Urban Bonfire for its versatility, allowing them to easily adapt the system to the unique and limited dimensions of the area.

“We had limited room to fit all of the elements for the outdoor kitchen. Urban Bonfire's range of cabinet sizes was ideal to give us the flexibility we needed while providing a sleek and simple aesthetic that fit well with the house and landscape.”
