Located high above the heart of Austin, this breathtaking backyard project by Arete Kitchens transformed a once underutilized cabana into a luxurious outdoor gathering space. Overlooking the stunning city skyline and the tranquil Lady Bird Lake, this redesign was driven by the need to both maximize the magnificent view for every guest and create a stylish, functional space for socializing in style.

The kitchen's previous arrangement was constraining; its structure hampered the natural flow of movement, conversation, and the opportunity to take in the stunning views. Designer Stacey Bauer of Arete Kitchens quickly recognized that a more fitting design was essential for this fun-loving family, who prioritize relaxation and a connection with nature. Her solution, a new L-shape model, dramatically enhanced flow, conversation, and seating, providing unobstructed views of the skyline and turning the area into the ultimate social hub.

The Central Texas climate demands materials that can endure extreme heat and sudden storms, making durability a non-negotiable requirement. To transform the area into a truly functional hosting space, the design incorporated specific storage solutions to minimize trips inside. This included storage drawers positioned for easy, immediate access to plates, glasses, and essential serveware. Additionally, the design incorporated refrigerator drawers for chilled meats, cheeses, and beverages, ensuring the entire space is highly functional and effortless for accommodating larger gatherings.

Urban Bonfire was chosen for both aesthetic appeal and performance. While the clients appreciated the clean, sophisticated lines of the cabinetry, durability and engineering were equally essential. They were pleasantly surprised to learn that all Urban Bonfire doors have a strong magnetic closure, providing a vital feature that was missing in their previous cabinetry, when doors would fly open during storms. Furthermore, Urban Bonfire’s sleek Anthracite finish was an exact match for the cabana’s existing framework, creating a cohesive aesthetic.

“Urban Bonfire was the perfect addition to this space. The slat wall with planter boxes added to their existing succulent collection. All the features in this space contribute to the Zen vibe.“
